First successful simultaneous heart and liver transplant in Vietnam

A 41-year-old man with multi-organ failure has become the first patient in Vietnam to undergo a successful simultaneous heart and liver transplant.

The patient had long suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that progressively worsened, leading to the deterioration of his liver, kidneys, and other vital organs. Without a heart and liver transplant, his life was in jeopardy.

Viet Duc Hospital was informed by Nghe An General Hospital of a patient suffering from a severe brain injury whose family had generously offered to donate their loved one's organs.

Doctors confirmed that the patient had experienced brain death on October 1 and that the patient’s organs could be donated.

The life-saving surgery was performed at Hanoi-based Viet Duc Friendship Hospital the sane day.

After an eight-hour operation, the patient was moved to the intensive care unit for monitoring. Both liver and heart functions progressively improved.

This marks the first time in Vietnamese medical history that a simultaneous heart and liver transplant has been successfully performed on a critically ill patient, highlighting the remarkable progress in Vietnam’s organ transplantation capabilities.
